The Grape Escape

The Grape Escape

When I saw concord grapes at the farmers' market, I knew I wanted to have a grape shrub. The shrub by itself combined with sparkling water had a soda-like quality I didn't love. I knew it needed something a little bitter and tannic to counter the sweetness. Super strong black tea turned out to be just the thing.

Makes 1 cocktail

  • 1.5 ounces concord grape shrub *
  • 1.5 ounces double-strength black tea **
  • Seltzer water

Place a large ice cube in a pretty glass. Combine the shrub and the tea in the glass and stir. Top with seltzer water. Cheers!

* My husband Dan adapted the recipe from Michael Dietsch's excellent book, Shrubs

** I make a black tea concentrate by using twice as much tea as the package directions call for. I have found that good quality loose leaf tea is far better than bagged.
